They recall the work of early Italian Renaissance artists such as Duccio and Fra Angelico who have been a long term inspiration for him; coupled with his more recent fascination with the work of the great orthodox icon painter Andre Rublev, remembered in Tarkovsky's 1966 film of the same name.
